Dream big, you just never know what ingredients the universe will add to your journey!
Det. Ray Rix is a seasoned investigator, but that hasn’t stopped his family from being in the crosshairs of criminals. After surviving being shot, he is dealing with the aftermath, including seeing a therapist and fearing for the safety of those closest to him. He blames Wilson O’Reilly, known to some as Forrest Clay, for everything, and Det. Rix swears he won’t rest until he is caught in Mark Nistor’s Inheriting Karma: Karma Hunts You Because….
Forrest contacts Cori, a police officer and his former girlfriend, to warn her of a contracted assassination. She doesn’t take his warning seriously and just wants him out of her life. That is, until there’s a shooting at a celebrity softball fundraiser.
Neight, the son of Sleight, a former gangster, is killed, but word on the street has it that he wasn’t the intended victim. It is the first of four shootings that are all connected, and Forrest is the prime suspect. The victims range from gang members to police officers, and even friends of the police department, and they link back to Ricky Turpin’s murder spree in the previous book, Surviving Karma.
Forrest insists he has nothing to do with the shootings, but it’s hard to ignore his connection to Ricky Topin. The FBI thinks that Ruelon Steele, a.k.a. Copper, an international crime overlord, may also be involved, so to catch a madman fueled by revenge, they must all work together to stop the killings.
Inheriting Karma is the third book in Mark Nistor’s Where’s Your Karma? series of dark police thrillers set primarily in Los Angeles. Nistor has created a world filled with a unique set of characters. In this case, two groups intersect: the police who are investigating the murders and rival gangs and their escalating power struggles. The latter involves the Hydra 8s and their former leader, Sleight, who changed his name to Ed and went underground to keep his family
safe after handing leadership to Neight. His past has caught up to him, and now his children are in danger. With every murder, the madness escalates until the explosive end.
Since I reviewed the previous novel, Surviving Karma, I wanted to follow the action on this one. It’s been months since the Copper Blue Killer was apprehended, and the police department has yet to return to normal. Det. Rix hasn’t gone back to work because his second surgery was more extensive than the doctor realized. Glen reaches out to Det. Jain, because he thinks someone is out to kill him and is increasingly paranoid. The story pivots when Neight is killed, and Sleight realizes his children have inherited karma because of his criminal past, making it a multi-layered storyline involving informants, gang members, and politicians.
Reading about the chaos at the first shooting had me invested in the story, and I couldn’t wait to find out where it all led. This suspenseful crime thriller combines street action with police procedural to catch a killer who is haunting the city at every level. It works well as a standalone novel, but to get a full
backstory on some of the main characters, it helps to read the previous ones. The action alternates between everyday life on the streets and the investigation into the murders.
Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of all the different characters from various walks of life, but they all have an important role to play. The prose contains enough street slang to make it believable without alienating some readers, and it’s even poetic at times: “Coffee steamed hours ago provides hydration as the enigma that is the gang member connection clams palms. Although ribbons dance from the vent, Colt loosens his strangulation.”
Inheriting Karma by Mark Nistor is a dark and gritty tale of revenge that reminds us that our past can often come back to haunt us. It uses the themes of guilt and power to explore the human condition when it comes to the inescapable consequences of past actions. Readers who appreciate cerebral psychological thrillers will enjoy the continuing saga of this unconventional crime series centered around karma. “No, Keight, it’s the two of you inheriting karma. All the haunting details of my past sit on your shoulders.”
